Why the Right Substrate Matters
Choosing a release liner starts with one core decision: the substrate. The base material determines how the liner performs in die-cutting, dispensing, and storage. It also affects cost. Understanding the options helps you avoid overpaying — or picking a material that fails on the production line.
Paper-Based Substrates
Glassine
A smooth, dense paper with good release properties. It's the workhorse of the label industry — economical and suitable for general-purpose pressure-sensitive applications. Best for standard label stock and tapes.
CCK (Clay Coated Kraft)
Clay coating gives CCK a flat, printable surface. It handles high-quality printing well and resists curling. Commonly chosen for sheet-form labels and graphic applications where appearance matters.
SCK (Super Calendered Kraft)
SCK offers higher strength and tear resistance than glassine. Its densified surface provides a reliable silicone holdout. Good for industrial tapes and applications requiring tougher liners.
PCK (Poly Coated Kraft)
A kraft paper base laminated with a thin PE layer. The plastic coating adds moisture resistance and strength. Ideal for applications needing extra durability without switching entirely to film.
Film-Based Substrates
PET (Polyester)
PET film delivers superior strength, heat resistance, and dimensional stability. It's the go-to choice for high-end medical tapes, optical adhesives, and electronics. Smooth surface ensures consistent adhesive transfer.
PE (Polyethylene)
Softer and more flexible than PET. PE film liners are often used in hygiene products and medical dressings where conformability to curved surfaces is required. Can be a cost-effective film option.
PP (Polypropylene)
PP offers a balanced combination of stiffness and chemical resistance. Often used in specialty tape applications. Generally more economical than PET.
Quick Selection Tips
Budget first? Start with glassine or CCK.
Need moisture or heat resistance? Move to film — PET or PE.
Want a middle ground? PCK blends paper economy with improved durability.
